Fer Isella

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Argentina is best known in the music world for its beautiful tango, yet at the hands of this multi talented artist, Fer Isella, tango only seems to be one of the many colors in his pallet. To say that his music is experimental is quite the understatement. This however does not mean it can’t be enjoyed by the less adventurous. The amazing “Turn Over”, from his album Doña Furia Gaucha, is a prime example of how Isella blends Argentinean folklore and jazz with a seamless beauty. Songs that can grace any major motion picture soundtrack or the halls of Radio City Music Hall, Isella’s talent is much more than meets the eyes… umm ears.

MiniVan

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

If youth is wasted on the young, then let it all go to these two kids from northern Mexico. With only two demo tracks available online so far, one can already get a sense that something special might be brewing under those pubescent heads of theirs. The track “Date La Oportunidad” has already made them a strong following among their local high schools and colleges, and as an opening act for bigger groups, they find the audience singing their songs louder than those of the main act… go figure…

Los Claxons

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

To many, the term “independent music” carries with it a preconceived notion that the music will be raw, unconventional and at times hard to listen to. Well, along comes this quartet from northern Mexico to give that idea a second thought. Los Claxons are closer to Jack Johnson and Josh Kelley than to most of their indie counterparts. With two albums under their belt, Los Claxons are making strides in the Latin pop/rock world. With a music video for “Plan Perfecto” climbing up the video charts, we are sure to hear a lot more from these guys. Lyrically, “En Primera”, touches on love and its many incarnations, something that adds to the appeal of the hooky melodies gracefully scattered throughout the songs.

Kinky

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

A lot has been said about this eclectic, electronic/rock-and the kitchen sink band, hailing from Monterrey, Mexico, but only one thing holds true throughout; Kinky is a force to be reckoned with. With a growing fan base and a tour schedule rivaling that of any mega-group, it is a surprise that this quintet is still one of Mexico’s best kept secrets… well… kinda’… Their high-energy blend of grooving drums, thumping bass lines, distorted synths, roaring guitars and vocals from another planet are best enjoyed with little care for the conventional. Listen to catchy vocal melody on “Una Linea De Luz” and the sleazy “Monday Killer”, with a special appearance from Men at Work’s Collin Hay. Who said Latin music only had accordions and congas? Guess what? Kinky has those too!!!
