I remember moments in my music-listening life like I remember pivotal moments in relationships. I remember a day in high-school as I was driving home from some meat head filled practice, glancing down at the CDs littered across my floorboard, and literally hearing the testosterone being sucked out of the side windows. I searched desperately for a Rage against the Machine album but couldn’t find one amidst the Paula Cole, Shawn Colvin, and Jonatha Brooke albums. Apparently I hadn’t been fully aware of Lilith Fair’s grip on my musical subconscious. It’s taken me almost a decade to fully recover. Kari has helped me with that process. She’s actually made me a little nostalgic. Kari’s music harkens back to the best of what that genre had to offer while not getting stuck in the broodingly self-aware rut that seemed to dominate the many of those artists. Her lyrics have moments of intense introspection, but she pairs it with music that has some soul ( “Seattle”), not just some suspended piano chords here and there. Her mix of quirkiness, soul, beauty, and sadness makes for a musical balance that parallels, well, life. Listen to her pull off this balancing act on her debut album ‘A Life in the Day.’
