Review:
It’s difficult to write a review on an artist like Sara Haze- what I should really be doing is starting her biography. She’s the kind of artist who will have a long and meaningful career in the industry, not because of her talent or look, but because of her sincere and adamant love of the music she performs.
At 19, here musicality is mature and nuanced. With an innate understanding of how music moves a soul, she sings to move the listener with every note. She’s not lazy or haughty about it, as can often happen with young girls of her talent; she’s just in love with the music. Wow, I think I’m gushing.
The most moving track off her debut album “The Ladder,” happens to be the one she penned solo, “Addiction.” It’s a very simple tune about breaking the need for affection, but somehow her honest delivery and plaintive lyricism catches me in a ways that make me understand the moment she’s in. “I want you so bad I’m shaking / you’re like a needle underneath my skin…” She’s honest to the point of despair. When I asked Sara what her favorite song was form this record, she said “Addiction” was the one she was most proud of. I can see why.
“Talks With Angels” is a co-write with producer Eric Fraley, who is working with her on a new album. “I talk with the angels, where all hopes and dreams mingle / I walk hand in hand with the wonders of the world / but I need you still…” Lyrics do get that good. Apparently. This is one of many co-writes for her new project, for which she’s also written with Glen Ballard and James Slater.
The funny thing about Sara is that she’s still a teenage girl- excited about Ed Hardy and Family Guy, she’s know every word to the OneRepublic album, and sings at church every Sunday. I asked Sara if, when she got famous, she’d introduce me to Justin Timberlake; she said she’d be happy to, but not to get my hopes up “because more than likely I’d pass out if I was in the same room with him.”
How often does a reviewer quote lyrics from a female pop-singer? I can’t imagine it’s very often. But I’m confident you’ll have plenty to dig into with the music of Sara Haze, with her voice pervasive throughout all of its better qualities.
