Review:
Being classified as undeniably WASP-Y for the last two decades, i do what i can to fight that stereotype. The battle may be solely in my dome, and the spoils may be unnoticeable to the general public, but my ego is often sufficiently lifted. I laughed in Office Space when David Herman’s character was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic passionately rapping along to Scarface’s ‘No Tears’, but i also felt a pang of empathy. I’ve been there. More often than not, i AM there…like right now…listening to Voodo Fe. This music is bad ass, and when i listen to it, so am i.
Be that as it may, this isn’t your standard stereotypical hip hop with heavy beats, melodyned vocals, and inane lyrics. This is the real deal a la Saul Williams. As a matter of fact, the hip hop label doesn’t at all suffice. Sure, the beats are often 808 heavy and the flow of Patrick Mathelier’s lyrics is often as relaxed and easy going as what Scarface offered us on ‘No Tears’, but that’s where the walls come down. Listen to ‘Crazy’ and hear Marilyn Manson have a love child with Nas and Trent Reznor….then memorize the lyrics, roll onto the 405, and feel a little more bad ass.
