I Guess Trent Reznor’s Just Smarter Than Everyone Else
iTunes is killing the music business. Bands can’t make money anymore. Blah! Blah! Blah!
While music industry insiders sit around lamenting the fact that they can no longer sell us an album with one good song and 10 terrible tracks at $16.95 a pop, Trent Reznor is making money by giving music away.
According to Reznor, 800,000 transactions of Nine Inch Nails album Ghosts I-IV generated $1.6 million in sales revenue in the first week of the album’s availability, despite the fact that the 36-song version of the album is widely available on torrent sites.
But music experts say that can’t work. That’s why they are all working on their resumes or thinking about opening a bistro and getting out of the business.
